The widespread critical acclaim received by St. Albans' native sons Friendly Fires after their debut album for XL Recordings hit the shelves in 2008 lent them a large following as well as countless multi-media licensing opportunities. Songs from the self-titled album appeared in video games, sports shows and Gossip Girl episodes. The indie-ness of their disco punk stylings kept them cool, and the popularity they gained from songs like "Paris" and "Jump in the Pool" kept them relevant in the larger pop culture sphere. The aim of their second album Pala, one and a half years in the making, seems to be to cash in fully on the commercial appeal of the type of dancefloor-ready pop music currently in vogue.

Pop Gloss has Charm

Opener "Live Those Days Tonight" boasts an impressive and texture-rich soundscape and vocals from lead singer Ed Macfarlane reminiscent of Jamiroquai, a meticulously produced slice of disco pop that kick starts an album with a theme of living in the moment. Nostalgia quickly creeps in, however, with "Blue Cassette", as the sounds of the past seem inescapable and Macfarlane croons, "I can't stop the reels from turning". The album is off to an exciting start, as the musical departures from the calculated indie of their debut to a far more polished, glossy, 80s pop sheen appear to be working.
