Salem Witch Trials of 1692

Salem is home of the brutal Witch Trials of 1692. As history explains, the trials lasted for 13 months. The jails were filled with hundreds of accused witches awaiting trial. During the tragedy, 156 people were accused; 19 were hanged; one man was pressed to death, and two dogs were hanged because they were thought to be witches’ familiars. According to the Witch History museum’s website, a Salem minister, accused by teenage girls of being the devil, was captured in Maine, and brought back to Salem where he was hanged and beheaded.

Visitors can learn more of the disturbing details at the Witch History museum, the Salem Witch Museum, and the Wax Museum of Witches & Seafarers. The original witchcraft papers from the trials are on display at the Peabody Essex Museum.
