Writing a budget doesn't need to be complicated or painful. If you have a budget, then you can pay your bills on time, plan for major purchases such as a car, home or furniture, and improve your credit rating. Without a budget, it will be nearly impossible to achieve financial security. Know where you spend your money, and then you can make wise choices about how you want to be spending it.

Manage Your Finances with a Spreadsheet

Open a spreadsheet. Title it, and save it. Give it a simple title you can remember, like Budget 2011. You can do these steps with paper and pencil, if you do not know how to use a spreadsheet. You may want a calculator, then, as well.

In the A column, write your name, and monthly income. Beneath that, list the names of anyone who lives with you and contributes towards the monthly budget. List "rental income" or any other source of income you may have. Then in the B column, list the amounts.
